I Influenced Fashion: Iris Apfel

“For me, the key to personal style lies in accessories. My friends tell me that my over-sized glasses and my pairs of bracelets have become my unwritten signature. I have amassed an enormous collection of bags, belts, bangles, and beads without which I would be lost. One can change the entire look of an outfit by substituting one accessory for another. I love objects from different worlds, different eras, combined my way. Never uptight –achieving hopefully- a kind of throwaway chic.”

Stated by the iconic Iris Apfel, we have her outlook on accessory emphasis. Iris is a 91 year old fashion icon, interior designer, and businesswoman, who is now having a documentary made about her legendary standing in the fashion and design industries. She has been known for her extravagant accessories and eye-popping eyewear, in addition to her amazing work with interior design and textiles alongside her husband Carl Apfel.  She also has a jewelry line that is featured on HSN and a MAC Cosmetic line as well. In 2005, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City honored Apfel with an exhibition that described her as a rare bird. The title was Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. Other museums duplicated and honored her with this exhibition as well.
