All morning on my way to work every radio station I tuned into was updating their listeners and myself on the Donald Sterling , owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, “Don’t bring blacks to my game” story. If you are not familiar with the story, it starts off like this.
Donald Sterling had a girlfriend, V. Stiviano, who was posting photos of herself with the honorable Magic Johnson to Instagram. Apparently, Donald Sterling was not fond of this “unruly” behavior as we heard on the clip of a racial conversation between himself and his now ex-girlfriend discussing the matter. Words from Sterling included “Don’t take pictures with them and don’t bring them to my games,” referring to black people.
Listen to the entire conversation here.
In response to the leaked conversation, fans, NBA players, major companies, celebrities, and even Donald Sterling’s wife showed their concern and high demand for punishing Donald Sterling for his verbal abuse and racism.
These concerns include:
- The Clippers taking off their team shirts, putting them mid-court and wearing team gear inside out
- The Game talks Empty Seat Campaign
- Snoop Dogg shares a explicit video on social media to Donald Sterling
- CarMax pulls their partnership with the Clippers
- Magic Johnson and his Los Angeles investor group want to purchase the Clippers from Donald Sterling
- Magic Johnson Says He Will Not Attend Another Clippers game as long as Sterling is the owner
- State Farm pulls all of their sponsorships with the Clippers
- Kia suspends sponsorship with the Clippers
- Shelly Sterling, Donald Sterlings wife sat courtside wearing all black.
- The Bobcats wear all black socks to support the Clippers in their game they had tonight. (4/28/2014)
- Virgin America suspend partnership with the Clippers
- Red Bull suspends partnerships with the Clippers
- Fan shows concern with “I’m a black guy and I bought a black guy to the game” signs.
- The Blazers wear all black socks to protest against Donald Sterling
- Lebron James say “There is no room for Donald Sterling in our league.”
- Kobe Bryant says “It’s a damn shame but a sad reality that we have people in the world who continue to further such ignorance.”
Michael Jordan said, “As an owner, I’m obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views. As a former player, I’m completely outraged. There is no room in the NBA - or anywhere else - for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed.”
I cannot wait to see the outcome. After reading more and doing more research, it makes me glad to know that everyone supports the opposing side of Donald Sterling.
I am also absolutely proud to learn that the Los Angeles NAACP will be withdrawing their intention to honor Sterling for a lifetime body of work and returning the donation he gave to the Los Angeles NAACP as stated by the LA chapters President Leon Jenkins.
This is amazing, but what is next? What will the NBA do about Sterling? Many are suggesting resignation while Magic Johnson wants to buy the team.
After hearing the argument with Sterling’s arrogance, I honestly think he will put up a fight and another side of me hopes he resigns or gives a teary apology. Even if he keeps the team after the apology, will the players feel comfortable enough to keep playing?
No choice but to wait and see.
Thanks for reading.
